Llaman a defender y fortalecer al INAI, Cofece e IFT
Academics have strongly criticized President López Obrador’s proposal to eliminate independent bodies like the INAI, arguing that such institutions are fundamental guarantors of human rights rather than obstacles to governance. The consensus among researchers is that these agencies must be strengthened and reformed instead of dismantled, as they ensure essential democratic functions such as access to public information. Although the proposal lacks immediate legislative viability due to the high thresholds required for constitutional changes, its political intent raises serious concerns about the erosion of institutional autonomy. Experts warn that even declarative statements during election cycles threaten democratic stability by signaling a disregard for established rights protections and the separation of powers. This issue is critical for open data because the INAI is the primary guardian of transparency and public information access in Mexico. Undermining this autonomous body would directly jeopardize the legal frameworks that enable citizens and researchers to obtain, analyze, and utilize government data, thereby weakening accountability mechanisms and the broader ecosystem of civic engagement based on transparent information.
