The aging of Spain’s agricultural sector is radically transforming the structure of rural land, driving a polarization toward large estates and fragmented minifundia resulting from inheritance divisions. This dynamic, combined with the widespread abandonment of farmland, poses serious environmental risks and inefficiencies in production. The disconnect between rural and urban areas, along with the lack of generational renewal, threatens the sustainability of the current model, creating an urgent need to restructure land ownership to prevent territorial degradation and improve the management of natural resources. The professionalization of farming and the growth of land leasing emerge as key mechanisms to mitigate these problems, facilitating access to land for young farmers and new generations. However, the increasing entry of investment funds and large corporations is capitalizing the sector without significantly altering the traditional ownership structure dominated by individual landowners. This phenomenon suggests a latent tension between the financial modernization of agribusiness and the preservation of small-scale landholding, requiring regulatory and organizational frameworks that balance the attraction of external capital with the protection of small producers. This report is relevant to the open data movement because it highlights the need for transparency in land management and agricultural ownership. The demographic and economic data presented here demonstrate that, without public access to accurate information on land tenure, fragmentation and abandonment remain invisible or are managed opaquely. The implementation of open data systems would enable civil society and public authorities to critically analyze these trends, promote accountability in the use of rural resources, and design more effective policies to incentivize a fair and sustainable generational renewal.
