The first half of 2023 saw a worrying 12.5% increase in femicides across Latin America and the Caribbean, underscoring a regional crisis in which nearly three-quarters of victims were killed by their partners or ex-partners. Alarmingly, more than a quarter of these perpetrators had prior records of reported violence, indicating that existing preventive measures and institutional protections have largely failed to safeguard women’s lives. This surge highlights a critical gap between the declaration of risks and the actual implementation of effective state interventions. A major obstacle to fully understanding the scope of this violence is the widespread lack of comprehensive, intersectional data. Only a minority of countries in the region currently have accurate statistics for the period, while others suffer from incomplete reporting systems that obscure the realities faced by marginalized groups. This data deficit hampers researchers’ and policymakers’ ability to conduct rigorous analyses or design targeted strategies, leaving the true extent of gender-based mortality largely hidden from public scrutiny. This article is crucial to open data initiatives because it exposes how incomplete and fragmented data collection directly impedes accountability and policy effectiveness. The report emphasizes that without transparent, standardized, and inclusive datasets, it is impossible to evaluate the success of public policies or accurately identify high-risk areas. Ultimately, it argues for the necessity of robust open data frameworks to monitor trends, prevent future violence, and hold states accountable for their failure to protect women, illustrating that data availability is a fundamental prerequisite for social justice.
