Paso a paso, cómo borrar tu huella digital para "desaparecer" de internet sin dejar rastros
The proliferation of personal data online has transformed digital privacy, establishing a critical relationship between one’s digital footprint and the right to be forgotten. While the digital footprint represents the involuntary and continuous trail that users leave through browsers, applications, and social media profiles, the right to be forgotten provides mechanisms to manage and limit the exposure of that information. This interaction underscores that proactive management of one’s own data is essential to control the persistence of digital identity and prevent the misuse of information by third parties or cybercriminals. The relevance of this issue for the open data movement lies in the need to balance transparency and access to information with the protection of individuals’ fundamental rights. Although the openness of public data fosters innovation and accountability, users must understand that mass digitization creates vulnerabilities. The ability to delete or restrict access to certain content does not guarantee its absolute erasure from the web infrastructure, highlighting the technical and legal complexity required to harmonize information availability with individual privacy—a central challenge in the ethical governance of open data. To mitigate risks, experts recommend adopting rigorous digital hygiene habits, such as clearing browsing histories, reviewing privacy settings, and deleting inactive accounts. At the same time, dominant platforms have implemented tools that facilitate requests for content removal, particularly content that violates privacy or contains sensitive material. However, the effectiveness of these measures is limited, as they only affect search results and do not remove the content from its original source. This implies that sovereignty over personal data requires a combination of individual technical actions and robust regulatory frameworks that empower users against the inertia of the network.
