Nuevo estudio: 1 de cada 8 personas en el mundo es obesa – DW – 01/03/2024
The study reveals that global obesity has reached one billion people, surpassing previous estimates and concentrating its growth in low- and middle-income countries. This phenomenon reflects an accelerated nutritional transition driven by food industrialization and the lack of effective public policies, challenging the notion that obesity is exclusive to developed nations. At the same time, there has been a significant reduction in extreme undernutrition, although regional inequalities persist. The coexistence of underweight and overweight conditions within many populations, known as the double burden, exposes biological and social vulnerabilities that require comprehensive health interventions addressing both sides of the nutritional crisis. This publication is relevant to open data because it demonstrates the utility of standardized, open global datasets for monitoring long-term public health trends. Transparency in methodology and results enables researchers and policymakers to identify emerging patterns, compare progress across regions, and inform strategic decisions based on accessible evidence.
