The National Institute of Statistics of Guatemala has adopted a new methodology for measuring poverty, focused on the purchasing power of a middle segment of the population. This approach excludes households with total deprivations or those with none, which could artificially reduce official poverty figures on paper, although it does not necessarily reflect the stability of real prices or persistent inflation. This redefinition is relevant to open data because it questions the transparency and comparability of official statistical data. By modifying the measurement criteria without considering the actual accessibility of goods, the integrity of the dataset is compromised. Citizens and analysts rely on clear and consistent indicators to evaluate public policies; opaque methodological changes hinder accountability and the ability of civil society to audit government information.
