Mapping Galway's Graveyard Legacy: A Community Engagement Success Story
Published: 2024-04-14Galway County Council’s project, ‘Digitizing Galway’s Graveyard Heritage,’ won the Esri Ireland Customer Success Award for Community Engagement. They mapped 40,000 graveyard records in County Galway, so people can see them online.
The council worked with different groups to teach locals how to use mobile technology and drones for mapping. This got the community involved and added more info to the database.
The project used GIS technology to share a lot of info for free. This helped not just locals, but also people from far away and students.
The project did well because it got money from many places. Esri Ireland liked how it was different and helped the community.
You can see the database online to learn more. This shows how sharing info and working together can make a legacy for the future.
