Data are fundamental to decision-making, but their true value is lost without appropriate context and clear regulations that enable their effective use. Currently, there is a disconnect between academic research, the State, and the private sector, where the lack of rules governing the permissible use of information prevents research from generating a tangible impact on society. The relevance of this article to the open data movement lies in its defense of the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) as an ethical and technical standard. These principles ensure that research outputs are not only accessible but also reusable and transparent, promoting responsible management that includes accountability and the publication of all results, both positive and negative. For Chile, the implementation of these standards is crucial to align sustainable development goals with data management. There is a call to build technical dialogues among the State, academia, and the private sector to strengthen regulations, ensuring that open data circulate properly and contribute to improving quality of life, transforming raw information into situated knowledge and applicable wisdom.
