The report highlights that micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are the essential backbone of global economies, even though they operate with significantly lower productivity than large corporations. It concludes that closing this gap would not only generate substantial economic value but also strengthen nations’ resilience in the face of global uncertainty. Sustained growth depends on MSMEs’ ability to integrate effectively into competitive and complementary networks with larger firms. Evidence suggests that productivity tends to improve when small and large companies interact closely, particularly in B2B environments. Therefore, the optimal strategy is not broad, general policies, but rather granular approaches that identify subsectors where MSMEs hold genuine competitive advantages. Fostering targeted partnerships in these areas helps build an economic fabric in which direct collaboration reduces operational disparities and benefits all involved stakeholders. This research is relevant to open data because it underscores the need to analyze productivity with a “microscopic” perspective. To implement effective granular strategies, stakeholders require access to detailed, disaggregated data that reveal subsector- and region-specific dynamics. Without transparency and the availability of accurate information, it is impossible to design the policy or business interventions needed to effectively connect firms and maximize collective productive potential.
