Uganda’s population jumps by 11.3 million
The preliminary results of Uganda’s 2024 National Population and Housing Census reveal a significant demographic shift, with the total population reaching 45.9 million, up from 34.6 million in 2014. Despite this growth, the annual population growth rate has slightly declined to 2.9 percent. The data highlights a predominantly young nation, where over half the population is under 17 years old, and shows a female majority in the total count, a trend that becomes more pronounced in older age groups due to higher male mortality rates. This article is highly relevant to open data as it marks Uganda’s first census utilizing digital technology for data collection and processing. This technological shift enhances the potential for real-time monitoring and improves data accuracy, setting a precedent for modernizing statistical operations. Furthermore, the release of preliminary findings at district and sub-region levels demonstrates a commitment to granular transparency, allowing communities and policymakers to access localized insights rather than relying solely on aggregated national figures. The ongoing publication of detailed metrics, including poverty levels and access to services, ensures that this demographic snapshot remains a dynamic and evolving resource. By addressing challenges such as hard-to-reach areas and resistance from certain groups, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics aims to provide a comprehensive foundation for future planning. This continuous stream of open, detailed data supports evidence-based decision-making, fostering better resource allocation and social development strategies across the country.
