The Association of Social Services Managers has officially questioned the reliability of the recent Census of Residential Centers in Spain. They have appealed to the authorities to demand explanations regarding the centers that were required to report data but failed to do so, and to prevent more than one in six establishments from disappearing from the statistics. This situation has raised deep concerns about the integrity of public information and the ability of institutions to properly oversee the sector. The presented census revealed a significant reduction in the number of centers and the lack of contribution from a substantial portion of those that exist. By failing to comply with statutory reporting obligations, the results lack the robustness needed to accurately reflect the country’s actual reality. Authorities must take clear measures to penalize omissions and ensure that all centers cooperate, thereby guaranteeing that the data accurately reflect the available infrastructure. This lack of transparency is critical for the open data community, as incomplete censuses invalidate evidence-based public policy analyses. Without reliable and accessible data, it is impossible to adequately assess the sufficiency of residential placements for older adults and people with disabilities. The significance of this issue lies in the urgency of having robust statistics to support decision-making in services that affect hundreds of thousands of people and workers, preventing opacity from hindering sustainable social development.
