Biodiversity data facility to deliver project grants following EU funding « Carbon Pulse

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), a Denmark-based organization, will launch a call for grant proposals in 2025, funded by €4 million from the EU. The grants, ranging from €20,000 to €60,000, will support data projects in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The initiative aims to improve the evidence base in data-poor areas and digitize existing biodiversity data. GBIF s work on data cubes will complement the grant projects by making the data more usable for corporations for nature disclosures. The biodiversity cubes initiative, in partnership with the Biodiversity Building Blocks for Policy (BBBP), integrates elements of what, when, and where. The GBIF is also working on becoming a key part of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) s global nature-related public data facility. Despite these efforts, researchers have warned that initiatives like GBIF and the Ocean Biodiversity Information System cover less than 7% of the world s surface at five kilometers resolution. The total EU investment in the Biodiversity Information for Development program between 2015 and 2029 is €9.5 million. In summary, GBIF is seeking to enhance access to scientific biodiversity data and improve the digitization of open biodiversity data in various regions. The organization is also working on data cubes to make the data more usable for corporations and aims to become a crucial part of the TNFD s global nature-related public data facility. However, the coverage of these initiatives remains limited.
