Library Science Talk - Artificial Intelligence and Academic Libraries
This session will delve into the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-powered chatbots, such as ChatGPT, within academic and research libraries. The discussion will highlight the opportunities and challenges these technologies present, aiming to reshape library services to better cater to modern users. AI-powered chatbots can enhance library services by promoting specialized librarianship and personalized information retrieval. However, concerns arise regarding user over-reliance on AI, potential biases, ethical implications, and communication issues. To mitigate these risks, a balanced approach that combines AI tools with traditional research methods is recommended. Libraries should also address ethical concerns by monitoring AI development and deployment. The session will emphasize the need for library professionals to adapt their information delivery methods and prove their value beyond technology. Satveer Sing Nehra, a PhD candidate in Library and Information Science at Savitribai Phule Pune University, will present his research on the intersection of Open Research Data and AI in libraries. Nehra s work has been recognized internationally, and he actively contributes to the global library community. The session is part of the Library Science Talks organized by the Zentralbibliothek Zurich, CERN Scientific Information Service, and AILIS. For more information, visit the AILIS website.
