NSF and Simons Foundation Launch New AI Institutes to Help Astronomers Understand the Cosmos

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Simons Foundation have funded two new institutes aimed at advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in astronomical sciences. These institutes, part of the NSF-led National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes program, will receive $20 million over five years each, with $10 million from NSF and $10 million from the Simons Foundation. The NSF-Simons AI Institute for Cosmic Origins (NSF-Simons CosmicAI) and the NSF-Simons AI Institute for the Sky (NSF-Simons SkAI) will develop AI tools to process and analyze vast amounts of astronomical data, create simulations of complex phenomena, and democratize access to astronomical data and analysis. The NSF-Simons CosmicAI, led by The University of Texas at Austin, will focus on accelerating traditionally time-consuming aspects of astronomical research, such as data processing and analysis, and developing a powerful AI-based assistant for scientific queries. The NSF-Simons SkAI, led by Northwestern University, will tackle complex problems in astrophysics and astronomy across a broad range of cosmic scales, from the physics of exotic objects to the role of dark matter and dark energy in the universe. Both institutes aim to empower researchers at all career levels by providing access to trustworthy AI that can rapidly conceptualize and assist in research projects. They will also focus on training and education for early-career researchers and students, as well as conducting outreach activities to disseminate their innovations and help train the AI-literate workforce of tomorrow. These initiatives are part of a broader federal effort to advance a cohesive approach to AI-related opportunities and risks, supporting the goals outlined in the White House s 2023 Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. The NSF has supported foundational AI research and the AI Institutes program for decades, and more information can be found on the NSF s Artificial Intelligence webpage.
