Cleveland Police Accountability Team gives update on consent decree compliance

The Cleveland Police Accountability Team and police leaders convened to discuss the outcomes of the Monitoring Team s 15th semiannual report. Dr. Leigh Anderson, Executive Director of the Police Accountability Team, highlighted that the city received upgrades in five out of eight areas as per the Consent Decree Monitoring Team s evaluation. These areas include Community Engagement and Building Trust, Crisis Intervention, Accountability, Transparency and Oversight, and Officer Support and Assistance. The city s new open data portal and training initiatives were commended for their effectiveness. Deputy Chief of Police Jarod Schlacht attributed the progress to collaborative efforts with the mayor s office, city council, and other partners. However, the monitoring team did not report upgrades in Community and Problem-Oriented Policing, Bias Free Policing, and Use of Force. These areas are subject to further review. The report is part of an ongoing effort to address issues related to excessive use of force, as Cleveland Police received a citation from the U.S. Department of Justice.
