General Aviation Landing Fees on the Rise | Aero - News Network
The trend of private companies using open-source data and optical capture to monitor landings is increasing, raising concerns about privacy and safety. While commercial airports have long implemented landing fees, general aviation (GA) fields have traditionally relied on fuel flowage, tie-down, and ramp fees. However, an alarming number of GA fields have recently started imposing landing fees, with Florida s DeLand Municipal Airport being a notable example. The fees, which would have required a $3 payment per 1,000 lbs of the aircraft s max landing weight, were intended to prevent traffic pattern saturation as nearby airports introduced similar fees. Critics argue that these fees set a disturbing precedent, penalizing the act of flying and potentially affecting safety. New pilots, in particular, rely on landing at various airports to master their skills. Moreover, automatic landing fees are seen as an unnecessary invasion of privacy. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Government Advocacy staff has expressed concerns about these fees, stating that they disincentivize the use of certain parts of the infrastructure and could impact safety. The GA community is actively advocating against landing fees, emphasizing the importance of maintaining limitless and unburdened skies. The EAA s stance is that while funding infrastructure is necessary, it should not be done through à la carte fees that could deter pilots from using certain airports and compromise safety.
