Oman launches national artificial intelligence programme

The Sultanate of Oman has initiated the National Programme for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Digital Technologies, aligning with Oman Vision 2040 s goal to leverage information and communications technologies to stimulate economic sectors. The programme, spanning from 2024 to 2026, includes various initiatives and projects to keep up with global AI advancements. Key components of the programme include: 1. A national platform for open data to support entrepreneurs, investors, and decision-makers. 2. A national center for research and development in AI to support researchers and academics. 3. A studio for AI, serving as a meeting place for IT specialists, companies, and institutions seeking technical solutions. 4. An Omani language model well-versed in Omani cultural, historical, artistic, and scientific content using generative AI. 5. A center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and the World Economic Forum. The programme also focuses on computing initiatives to spread awareness, enhance research, and adopt computing applications. Eng. Said Hamoud Al Ma awali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, highlighted the programme as an upgrade to the Executive Programme for AI and Advanced Technologies launched in 2022. The aim is to establish a solid foundation for implementing AI applications and advanced digital technologies in Oman, building a digital economy capable of sustainable development. The National AI Programme emphasizes introducing AI applications in economic and development sectors to localize advanced digital technologies, achieve good governance, and improve Oman s global indices. The initiatives are expected to support emerging AI technology companies, bolster investments, and establish new AI data centers. The digital economy s contribution to Oman s GDP is projected to increase from 2% in 2021 to 10% by 2040.
