Oman national AI programme launched for global digital leadership
The National Programme for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Digital Technologies was launched in Muscat to align Oman with global AI advancements and support the country s economic growth in line with Oman Vision 2040. The five-year programme (2024-2026) includes initiatives such as a national open data platform, a research centre for AI, a collaborative AI studio, and an Omani language model using generative AI. The programme also aims to establish a centre for Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies in partnership with the World Economic Forum and initiatives in quantum computing. The launch was marked by statements from H E Saeed bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, who emphasized the government s commitment to using AI and digital technologies to create a robust digital economy that supports sustainable development. The programme aims to raise Oman s ranking in the global Government Readiness Index for AI and increase the digital economy s contribution to the country s GDP from 2% in 2021 to 10% by 2040. H E Dr Ali al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology, highlighted the programme s importance in boosting the digital economy s contribution to the GDP, integrating AI technologies across economic and development sectors, and localizing these technologies in the sultanate. The programme also includes efforts to boost the ICT sector, such as the AI Makers Initiative and the National Research Centre, which offer opportunities for startups and innovators. Additionally, the programme focuses on enhancing digital skills among Omani youth by introducing specialized training in AI and data analysis in schools with new curriculum. This initiative aims to prepare the next generation of innovators and creators as Oman positions itself as a regional leader in AI development. Overall, the National Programme for AI and Advanced Digital Technologies seeks to leverage AI and digital technologies to drive economic growth, strengthen Oman s position in global rankings, and support sustainable development.
