Beyond the route

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates over 4,900 buses across 327 routes daily, transporting approximately 1.3 million New Yorkers. Despite the significance of the bus network in servicing millions of residents, it often receives less attention compared to the subway system. The MTA acknowledges the importance of the bus network and continuously seeks ways to improve its efficiency and service to riders. Bus routes face numerous challenges, such as double-parked cars, road closures, delivery vehicles, and heavy traffic, which can hinder their speed and reliability. To address this issue and provide transparency to the public, the MTA has introduced the Bus Route Segment Speeds Dataset on Open Data. This dataset offers detailed information on bus speeds across the entire network, allowing riders and stakeholders to better understand the performance of the bus system and identify areas for improvement. The new dataset aims to shed light on the complexities of navigating NYC s bustling roadways and help the MTA develop strategies to enhance the bus network s overall performance. By making this data available, the MTA hopes to foster a more informed dialogue about the bus system and encourage collaborative efforts to optimize its operations for the benefit of New Yorkers.
