Survey : AI , social media degrading global information
The International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) survey highlights a concerning trend in the global information environment, with a majority of experts predicting further degradation due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). The report, Expert Survey on the Global Information Environment 2024 – Searching for Solutions, identifies social media owners, politicians, and governments as the primary threats to information integrity. The survey, conducted in June by IPIE, involved over 400 leading academics from various disciplines across 66 countries. The findings revealed a growing alarm, with 63% of experts anticipating worsening conditions in 2023, and 75% of experts from global majority countries expressing strong pessimism about the future of the information environment. Key findings include: 1. Social media owners and AI threat: Experts consider social media platform owners the greatest threat to the information environment, followed by governments, politicians, and political parties. Nearly two-thirds (63%) feel that AI-generated content has negatively impacted the global information environment. 2. Generative AI’s Dual Nature: While generative AI is seen as a threat due to its potential to amplify biases, facilitate misinformation, and increase harassment, it also holds promise in enhancing content detection, supporting journalism, and improving cross-cultural communication. 3. Data Access Challenges: Three-quarters (77%) of researchers are concerned about our ability to understand the challenges ahead or make effective policy due to poor data access. This highlights the need for enhanced data transparency and availability. IPIE Co-founder and President Phil Howard emphasized the critical juncture the global information environment is at, with social media platform owners control over content distribution and moderation policies posing a grave risk to information integrity. Chief Science Officer for the IPIE, Sebastián Valenzuela, stressed the importance of opening data gates to advance our understanding of the information environment. The survey results reflect a growing consensus among the global research community about the deteriorating state of the information environment. Experts view generative AI
