Costin Leading the Way for National BIM Study
The University of Florida s College of Design, Construction & Planning values innovation, with Dr. Aaron Costin leading a significant $2 million Department of Transportation study to expand building information modeling (BIM) for bridges and structures. BIM, a 3D modeling software process, digitally represents a facility s life cycle, enabling various applications and integration with emerging technologies like robots and AI. Costin s research aims to create an open data exchange standard for BIM specifically for bridges and other structures, which have been previously neglected. This project involves collaboration between the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Official Committee on Bridges and Structures, and 23 states, including Florida. Costin s role in the project includes leading traditional academic research, collecting industry knowledge, and developing guidelines for future implementation. The research will define the U.S. national standard and integrate work into similar projects worldwide, setting the international standard. Costin s work is inspired by his former advisor, Charles Chuck Eastman, known as the Father of BIM. Costin is honored to work in Eastman s legacy and believes the outcomes of the research will improve production and efficiency for different roles involved in building bridges. The success of this project will revolutionize transportation infrastructure construction and management, benefiting the economy and citizens. Overall, Costin is proud to be part of this groundbreaking research, which will serve as a starting point for future developments and applications in the field.
