No olvides desactivar el WiFi de tu celular al salir de casa: estos son los peligros de no hacerlo

The article warns that keeping WiFi enabled on mobile devices in public spaces exposes users to significant security, privacy, and performance risks. Automatic network scanning allows cybercriminals to intercept sensitive data through man-in-the-middle attacks, compromising the confidentiality of financial and personal information. Moreover, this constant connectivity facilitates user location tracking, creating a movement profile that can be exploited for commercial or malicious purposes, underscoring the critical need to actively manage wireless connections to protect digital identity. Beyond cyber threats, the continuous operation of the WiFi radio negatively impacts device battery life and efficiency. The uninterrupted search for signals consumes battery and processor resources, resulting in reduced charge duration and potential interference with other essential services such as GPS or mobile networks. These cumulative effects not only degrade the user experience but also accelerate hardware wear, making manual deactivation of WiFi outside secure environments a practical measure to optimize overall phone performance and preserve its lifespan. This recommendation is highly relevant to the open_data community, as it highlights how open connectivity infrastructure, while vital for digital inclusion, generates negative externalities in terms of personal data security and privacy. By normalizing proactive cybersecurity practices, such as disabling WiFi in untrusted spaces, citizens are empowered to mitigate the risks inherent in data collection by public networks. This reinforces the understanding that technological openness must be accompanied by education on responsible management of one’s digital footprint, balancing access to information with the protection of user integrity against surveillance and data theft in open environments.
