The depletion of real human data has driven the adoption of synthetic data as a viable alternative for training artificial intelligence models. This transition responds to the scarcity of public datasets due to technological restrictions and ethical considerations, as well as the high costs and inherent biases associated with human labeling. By simulating information from initial samples, the industry seeks to significantly reduce operational expenses and accelerate algorithm development, positioning this methodology as a central component of the next generation of intelligent systems. From the perspective of open data, this shift poses a fundamental challenge to transparency and accessibility. The reliance on artificial data complicates external auditing and independent verification, as these datasets do not reflect the real-world diversity of the world nor guarantee the inclusion of marginalized perspectives without conscious human intervention. Moreover, there is a risk that developers may use synthetic generation to circumvent regulations regarding consent and privacy, thereby centralizing control of knowledge in the hands of those who possess the generative algorithms rather than fostering openness and equitable access to information. However, long-term sustainability requires a critical balance between innovation and rigor. Research indicates that exclusive reliance on synthetic data can degrade the quality and diversity of models, leading to cumulative biases and hallucinations that compromise the reliability of predictions. Therefore, although synthetic data is a necessary technological solution in the face of resource limitations, its integration must be complemented by human oversight and ethical governance frameworks. This ensures that advances in artificial intelligence do not come at the expense of accuracy, social justice, or the transparency necessary to maintain public trust in open systems.
