La natalidad "no para de caer" en Canarias: un 23,7% desde 2018

The demographic landscape of the Canary Islands reveals a stark decoupling between population growth and natural vitality. While the total population has steadily increased, this expansion is driven entirely by migration, as the natural balance has turned persistently negative. This shift highlights a profound structural change, indicating that the archipelago’s future demographic stability relies increasingly on external migration rather than internal reproductive capacity. Fertility rates have plummeted significantly over the last decade, with birth numbers hitting historic lows across nearly all islands. This decline is not uniform, showing slight resilience only in specific locales, yet the overall trend points to a shrinking native-born generation. The aging demographic profile, reflected in the rising age of parents and the prevalence of medical interventions like cesarean sections, underscores the complex social and health dynamics accompanying this fertility crisis. This data is crucial for open data initiatives because it demonstrates how transparent, granular statistical reporting can expose underlying societal trends that aggregate national figures might obscure. By making detailed regional indicators publicly accessible, authorities and researchers can better analyze the interplay between migration, aging, and public health policy. Such open datasets are essential for fostering informed debates and developing targeted strategies to address the long-term sustainability of island communities facing demographic transitions.
