Los lagos y estanques de Alaska revelan los efectos del derretimiento del permafrost - Eos

The melting of Arctic permafrost releases carbon and alters the climate, but monitoring this remote change is logistically complex. This study demonstrates that the evolution of lakes and ponds can serve as a reliable indicator of the underlying permafrost state, offering a practical and scalable alternative for environmental monitoring. By analyzing high-resolution satellite data on hundreds of thousands of water bodies, it was found that the hydrological response critically depends on local geological history. In non-glaciated areas, thawing typically reduces lake sizes, whereas in regions shaped by glaciers, lake areas may increase due to rugged topography and low soil permeability. The relevance to open data lies in the publication of the "Alaska Lakes and Ponds Occurrence Dataset." By democratizing access to this detailed geospatial information, global climate change research is facilitated, enabling the scientific community to use accessible tools to better understand Arctic dynamics and their future impacts.
