Ecologistas en Acción califica de “lamentable” la gestión de los residuos municipales - Tercera Información
The analysis of municipal waste management in Spain reveals a concerning stagnation in selective collection, falling far short of the regulatory targets set for 2035. The lack of significant progress compared to the previous year, coupled with a slight decline in preparation for recycling and an increase in landfilling, indicates that the country will once again fail to meet the goals established for 2025. This negative inertia suggests that current policies are not generating the disruptive changes needed to transform the existing waste management model. Territorial disparity is another critical feature, with some autonomous communities standing out for their efficiency while others remain extremely lagging behind. The reliance on mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) facilities partially distorts the actual recycling data, exposing the fragility of certain management systems. Moreover, the inadequate implementation of separate collection of organic waste in numerous municipalities reflects a structural inefficiency that hinders real progress toward a circular economy, exacerbating the volume of unvalued waste. This report is relevant to the open data movement because it underscores the need for transparency and quality in public data to evaluate environmental policies. The ability to identify regional inequities and systemic failures depends directly on citizens and civil society having access to accurate and up-to-date information. Without robust open data, it is impossible to demand the implementation of mandatory legal measures, such as pay-as-you-throw schemes or landfill taxes, which are essential to correct the unsustainable trajectory of waste management.
