Un repositorio de núcleos de coral diseñado para la transparencia y accesibilidad - Eos
Coral reefs serve as historical archives of climate and oceanic conditions, but the lack of a centralized repository for images of their cores has hindered transparent data sharing. To address this critical gap, CoralCT was developed—a virtual, open-access platform designed to consolidate and organize coral core scans. This initiative not only preserves valuable records that might otherwise be lost, but also removes barriers to collaborative research and prevents unnecessary duplication of effort, which is especially important given the negative impact of sampling on endangered species. The platform promotes scientific reproducibility by archiving not only the original images, but also the metadata and density-band analyses performed by users. By enabling other scientists to independently verify and interpret these data, CoralCT mitigates subjective biases and strengthens the integrity of climate reconstructions. Additionally, the application provides privacy controls to protect intellectual property during ongoing research, helping to overcome researchers’ initial reluctance to share their findings in a secure and orderly manner. The relevance of this article to the open-data community lies in its practical demonstration of how open-access science can address complex methodological challenges in the Earth sciences. CoralCT illustrates that full transparency, combined with accessible technological tools and inclusive education, enhances the advancement of collective knowledge. This model underscores that universal availability of rigorous scientific data is essential for understanding and addressing global environmental threats, setting a precedent for data management in other critical disciplines.
