Revealed: Durham modules ranked by student attainment in 2021-2022 - Palatinate

This article highlights how Freedom of Information requests can unlock granular university performance data, demonstrating the practical value of open data in educational transparency. By analyzing undergraduate module attainment, it reveals significant disparities in academic outcomes across disciplines. For instance, physics and English showed exceptionally high achievement rates, while foundation years and modern foreign languages lagged behind. This information allows students and educators to identify trends and potential biases in grading or curriculum design. The data further exposes variance at the module level, where introductory courses often present greater challenges than advanced ones. Notably, first-year design modules recorded no top-grade awards, contrasting sharply with business analytics modules where the vast majority achieved first-class honors. Similarly, third-year logic modules saw exceptional success rates compared to theology courses. These specific insights illustrate how open data can pinpoint exactly where support or curriculum adjustments might be needed, moving beyond general departmental averages to actionable, granular evidence. Ultimately, the relevance to open data lies in its ability to democratize information that was previously siloed within institutional databases. Making this attainment data publicly accessible empowers prospective students to make informed choices and holds institutions accountable for equitable grading standards. It proves that transparency does not just reveal raw statistics but fosters a deeper understanding of educational quality, encouraging continuous improvement through publicly scrutinized metrics rather than opaque internal assessments.
