Internet: el mito de la privacidad | El Universal

The article argues that the privacy crisis in the digital age, exemplified by the massive exposure of conversations on AI platforms, is an inevitable consequence of the historical architecture of the internet. Far from being an isolated security failure, this vulnerability reflects the original design of networks, which were created for interconnectivity and data flow, not for protecting individual privacy. The exposure of sensitive data, such as medical diagnoses or confessions, demonstrates that the system is intrinsically open to public indexing when users share information without understanding the underlying technical implications. Beyond technology, the text contends that the Western notion of privacy as an absolute individual right is philosophically inconsistent with existing power structures. Historically, governments have prioritized collective harmony and state security over the citizen’s private sphere, a trend evidenced by mass surveillance programs and the use of espionage tools against dissidents. Therefore, the expectation that digital systems guarantee a reserved and inaccessible space for personal information is an illusion that ignores the political and technical reality in which the state and corporations have the capacity and precedent to intervene in the name of the common good. This perspective is crucial for the open data movement because it shifts the debate from protecting individual secrecy to systemic transparency and digital literacy. If classical digital privacy is an obsolete concept in infrastructures designed for open exchange, the focus should fall on the ethics of handling collective data and the transparent governance of the institutions that manage it. Recognizing this reality enables citizens and activists to demand greater corporate and state accountability, understanding that true protection does not lie in the expectation of concealment, but in conscious control over what data is exposed and under which regulatory frameworks of openness and access.
