#WND2025: Journalism under siege

Global journalism is facing an unprecedented crisis as violence, intimidation, and censorship intensify, fundamentally undermining the ability to collect facts and verify information. This coordinated assault, observed across both authoritarian regimes and established democracies, indicates a dangerous erosion of shared reality. Journalists are increasingly targeted for their professional identity, even in traditionally safe environments, suggesting that the protection previously afforded by media accreditation has vanished. The severity of this threat is exacerbated by the lack of institutional support and the proliferation of disinformation. Despite numerous assaults and death threats reported worldwide, many governments remain silent, leaving journalists isolated and vulnerable. This silence is particularly concerning given the rise of authoritarian rhetoric that openly encourages hostility toward the press, fostering an environment of impunity for attackers and effectively driving journalism out of many regions. This context is critically relevant to open data because the integrity of information ecosystems is a prerequisite for utilizing data effectively. As generative AI pollutes digital spaces with fabricated content, the trust required to validate open data sources collapses. Without a robust, safe, and free journalistic ecosystem to verify and contextualize facts, open data risks becoming just another source of noise, rendering its potential for transparency and accountability obsolete.
