El derecho a la información sigue pendiente en Venezuela
IPYS denounces in Venezuela a structural opacity and systematic censorship that conceal essential public data on health, the economy, and security. This lack of transparency undermines democratic oversight, as evidenced by the discontinuation of official statistics such as inflation rates and the existence of millions of people living in "news deserts." The situation is exacerbated by the deliberate suffocation of the press, including the blocking of independent media outlets and the detention of journalists, in many cases without any official information about their whereabouts. Daily harassment, ranging from the confiscation of equipment to intimidating surveillance, aims to silence dissent and keep the citizenry misinformed. This report is crucial for open data because it illustrates how the manipulation of public information violates the right to access. Without reliable and open data, transparency disappears, preventing citizens from making informed decisions or effectively holding their leaders accountable, thereby weakening the foundations of democracy.
