A team led by researcher Cristóbal Galbán has secured funding to study the impact of perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) on Antarctic ecosystems. Due to melting ice, these persistent chemicals, known as “forever contaminants,” are being released and affecting the health of local biota and microbiota. The research aims to identify biomarkers that indicate minimal changes at the molecular level, which is crucial for developing better conservation strategies in an environment that serves as a natural laboratory for climate change. The significance of this project lies in the generation and open-access dissemination of a large volume of data. By sharing this information with the global scientific community and policymakers, it promotes transparency and access to specialized knowledge. Given the limited literature on PFAS in Antarctica, this initiative creates a unique database that complements existing evidence from the Arctic, offering a different perspective due to the continental and runoff characteristics of the South Pole. Finally, Chile positions itself as a regional leader in PFAS research, leveraging its seasonal conditions to obtain scientific results in shorter timeframes. The study not only evaluates the direct impact on wildlife but also examines how certain microbial communities respond to the presence of these toxins. This interdisciplinary approach enriches the field of open data by providing robust evidence on the effects of global pollution in polar ecosystems, facilitating a better understanding of long-term risks to human health and the environment.
