The WHO report reveals that global life expectancy has nearly fully recovered from the decline caused by the pandemic, reaching levels close to those seen before 2019. However, health-adjusted life expectancy shows a slower recovery, underscoring the importance of analyzing comprehensive well-being data. This distinction is key to the open data movement, as it facilitates transparency and access to public health metrics that go beyond mere survival, enabling more accurate assessments of the true health impact. Moreover, the list of leading causes of death has changed dramatically; diseases such as COVID-19 and tuberculosis have dropped out of the top ten, giving way to noncommunicable diseases. This shift reflects a global epidemiological transition in which chronic diseases dominate mortality statistics, accounting for a significant majority of deaths worldwide. The relevance for open data lies in the need to publish and democratize these updated epidemiological datasets. Only through open access to rigorous, region- and income-level-disaggregated information can we adequately understand the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases in low-resource countries. This visibility is essential for designing equitable health policies and evaluating the long-term effectiveness of public health interventions.
