Humanizing AI with Ethical Governance | By Margarita Ducci

The text argues that the true challenge of Artificial Intelligence does not lie in the technical capabilities of machines, but rather in our willingness to preserve humanity in the face of automation. Although digital technology has the potential to significantly accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, there is an imminent risk of deepening social divides if innovation advances without robust ethical governance. This warning is shared by international organizations and leaders within the industry itself, who caution about unprecedented threats to our institutions if a clear regulatory framework that prioritizes human dignity is not established. In this context, Chile positions itself as a regional reference thanks to its national strategy, which seeks to combine technological advancement with ethical safeguards. However, the mere existence of public policies and legislative updates is insufficient if ethics are not translated into the everyday practices of organizations. The real imperative is to humanize innovation, ensuring that its implementation critically assesses social impact, labor equity, and data protection, moving beyond the exclusive pursuit of economic efficiency to guarantee inclusive and secure progress. The relevance of this article to open data is fundamental, as algorithmic transparency and access to information are pillars for auditing fairness and privacy. Open data enable monitoring of how AI affects diversity and institutional trust, facilitating the accountability necessary to close gaps rather than perpetuate them. Without open data and civil participation, the aforementioned ethical governance lacks the indispensable social oversight. Therefore, promoting open data standards is a key tool for building a responsible technological future, where innovation serves the common good and protects the fundamental rights of present and future generations.
