Enhancing Cross-Region Road Extraction via the CHN10-CUG Benchmark and Dataset
Researchers have introduced CHN10-CUG, a high-resolution road dataset covering ten Chinese cities, alongside a unified benchmark to address critical gaps in road network extraction. This initiative provides a standardized, topology-aware resource that enables fair comparisons between generic segmentation models and specialized road-specific methods. By integrating diverse annotations such as road-surface pixels, centerlines, and graph labels, the study overcomes previous limitations where existing datasets lacked multi-level labels or sufficient representation of complex urban environments, thereby facilitating robust multitask learning and cross-region generalization. The comprehensive evaluation reveals that road-specific and graph-based approaches generally outperform generic models in preserving network connectivity and handling fragmented scenes. Crucially, the benchmark demonstrates competitive performance in cross-region transfer and long-term temporal mapping without requiring extensive fine-tuning. These findings highlight that current deep learning models often degrade when applied to new imaging conditions or diverse geographic contexts, emphasizing the need for benchmarks that test robustness and scalability before real-world deployment in navigation and urban planning. This work is highly relevant to open data because it establishes a reproducible framework for remote sensing research, encouraging transparency and standardization in model evaluation. By openly sharing the dataset and benchmarking protocols, it supports the development of scalable, infrastructure-aware mapping tools that can be applied to disaster response and climate-resilience planning. Ultimately, CHN10-CUG bridges the gap between controlled experiments and practical application, fostering an open ecosystem where researchers can validate and improve road extraction technologies for global sustainability efforts.
